Workout SNAPSHOT

A 45-minute workout that includes heart-rate monitors to track your grit points while you work through several stations. 35 seconds of work and 10 seconds of rest on each station before you either move on to the next or complete the same station again if it’s a ‘Double Set’ type of class. Typically you’d go through 2 rounds of all stations (or 4 with the circuit pump class), followed by a group challenge and a cool down stretch.

CLASS TYPES:

  • Circuit Pump: 30-second strength exercises & 18-second high-intensity cardio bursts across six stations

  • Strength & Cardio: Alternates between strength and cardio exercises.

  • Strength: As close as it gets to a functional fitness class, weight exercises to build muscle

THE FULL SCOOP

Beat81 has expanded massively over the last years, with several indoor and outdoor workout locations all over Berlin. They’re an easy choice if you’re looking for a quick 45min Circuit Pump class or HIIT workout to get that heartbeat up or want to get as close to a functional fitness class as you can with their strength class. Their Strength & Cardio class combines both and is a good option if you do want to burn some extra calories while also building up your strength.

All classes follow a similar format which makes you work through several workout stations for several seconds with a few seconds of rest before moving on to the next station. As the name suggests, the double set classes will make you repeat the same workout station twice before moving on to the next one which also means there will be less workout stations in total.

Heart-rate monitors are worn throughout the workout to track performance and keep you motivated to push yourself. Once everyone’s resting heart-rate is accounted for on the screen at the front of class the warm-up begins. Your coach will make sure you get your heart-rate well and truly up before you get flung into the main workout. In heart-rate monitor terms that means you’re well out of the blue zone and heading into the 80% of your maximum heart-rate red zone. The importance of getting up in the red zone is so that as soon as you begin the first station your heart-rate can work in the higher cardio blasting zones to maximise the burn.

The intervals might sound easy on paper, but you’ll quickly find the second set start to get tough. The idea is to get a well-balanced full-body workout that challenges every energy and major muscle group. Think dumbbell strict presses, followed by the ski-erg. Move on to the rowing machine and farmers carry before making it to the final pair: goblin squats and box jumps (a killer).

Each time your heart-rate monitor hits the 90% zone you get awarded a grit-point which shows up live on screen. Achieve over fifteen points and BEAT81 declares you have unlocked the after-burn effect from the workout. This means you burn calories even after the workout is finished, the perfect environment to build lean muscle and ignite your metabolism. This way of training offers a useful guide as to how hard you are pushing yourself.

After your two (or four when doing the circuit pump) rounds are completed there is a short break to catch your breath back before a final group challenge is set. After working out in a pair or as an individual it is a nice feeling to come together as a group to complete the final minutes with something a bit more light-hearted and fun; think team relays of various exercises, or team crunches set as a race to twenty. A short cool down follows to prevent tight muscles later.
For those who love data, after every BEAT81 workout you’ll receive a detailed report from your heart-rate monitor so you can track performance goals. Over time and regular training it’s encouraging to see performance improve and time needed for recovery between rounds reduce.
